Frequently asked questions

Why do I enter finished width/length instead of the width in the reed?
The finished size is what you actually want after take-up and wet-finishing shrinkage pull the cloth in. This tool works backward from your finished size to the larger on-loom width and length, then applies Schacht Spindle Company's own formula (width in the reed × EPI = total warp ends) to size the warp.
Why are there two take-up percentages (length and width)?
Take-up and wet-finishing shrinkage are usually bigger in length than in width — Liz Gipson's own measurements (Yarnworker) give a worked example of 13% length vs. 9% width, the defaults used here. As a rough starting point by fiber: cotton ~10%, wool ~15%, highly elastic yarns ~20% (also Yarnworker) — for the same fiber, width is commonly around two-thirds of the length figure. It genuinely varies by yarn, sett, and finishing method, so treat these as planning estimates and confirm with a sample.
What's a reasonable loom waste allowance?
For a rigid-heddle loom, about 18-22in for a direct warp or 22-26in for an indirect warp is a commonly cited range (Liz Gipson/Yarnworker's own loom-waste audit). A floor loom typically needs more — Handwoven magazine suggests at least 27in. It varies by loom and warping method, so check your own loom's actual minimum once you know it.
My reed is a fixed dent size — how does that relate to EPI?
On a rigid-heddle loom, EPI equals the reed's dent count only if you thread one end per dent (a direct warp). If you double up (two ends per dent, an indirect warp) your actual EPI is twice the dent count — enter the EPI you're actually weaving at, not the reed's printed size, if you're doubling.
